How to replace a Vanmoof S3/X3 E-Shifter

Posted in

Here is a quick guide on how to replace an E-shifter on the S3, the process is the same on the X3.

You will need the following tools:

  • 15 mm spanner
  • 8 mm spanner
  • 4.0 mm ball head allen key
  • 2.5 mm allen key
  • Anti-theft nut tool

STEP 1

Disconnect the cable. Remove the plug from the frame and gently slide out the connector. Disconnect the connector.

STEP 2

Remove Eshifter bolt. Use the 4.0 mm allen key to remove the bolt that holds the E-Shifter to the frame.

STEP 3

Remove chainguard. Remove the left bolt that holds the cover top of the chainguard, then take off the cover top and remove the other 2 bolts that will give you enough room to remove the wheel.

TIP: Don’t remove the whole chainguard holder otherwise you will have to re-align the whole guard again.

STEP 4

Remove rear wheel. Undo both wheel nuts and remove the wheel, make sure the E-Shifter is faced down. If not faced down it will get stuck on the Chain Guard holder.

STEP 5

Remove Eshifter from hub/wheel. Safest way to remove the E-Shifter is to remove the nut(left photo) while holding the axle with an 8mm spanner (right photo). After removing the nut you can just slide off the E-Shifter.

Installing the E-Shifter

STEP 1

Checking the position of the hub and the E-Shifter. The markings on the inside of the E-Shifter should be at 45° angle. The ring pointed at in the picture below needs to be positioned to the left of the yellow dot on the hub.

STEP 2

Slide the E-Shifter on the axle. Triple check that the shifter is properly aligned, see below. If not DO NOT fit the nut on that holds the shifter on the axle, this will break the casing of the E-Shifter.

STEP 3

Place the wheel back. When the E-Shifter is fitted properly on the hub you can put the nut back on the axle and tighten it (Hand tight) while holding the axle with the 8mm spanner.

STEP 4

Put everything back together. Tighten wheel nuts non-drive side and then drive side. Fit the rest back together in the same order as you removed it.

These steps provide detailed guidance on how to remove and reinstall the E-Shifter on your bike, ensuring proper alignment and installation.
